Nationwide — After relocating from Washington, D.C. to Atlanta, entrepreneur, insurance professional, and legacy advocate India Brown has launched the Legacy Leaders Scholarship Program, a free initiative designed to help 25,000 Black families access scholarship funding for college. The program gives families access to one of the nation’s largest private college tuition rewards networks, providing guaranteed scholarship dollars that can be used at more than 440 participating colleges and universities nationwide, including a growing number of HBCUs. Enrollment is free, there are no income requirements or application essays, and families can begin earning scholarship rewards years before their children reach college age.
Her mission is rooted in personal experience. At just 16 years old, she lost her mother unexpectedly, leaving her family without life insurance or a financial safety net. Although she had been accepted to Spelman College, the financial hardship that followed made attending impossible. That experience inspired her to dedicate her career to helping families build financial security and educational opportunities for future generations. After more than a decade serving families throughout Washington, D.C., Maryland, Virginia, and Georgia as a licensed insurance and financial services professional, she chose Atlanta, home to several HBCUs, as the next chapter in expanding her work.
The scholarship program is more than a professional endeavor for India; it is a promise fulfilled within her own family. Her daughter, Nia, now attends Spelman College, the same institution that India dreamed of attending herself. Through years of participation in the Legacy Leaders Scholarship Program, Nia accumulated more than 52,000 scholarship points that translate into tuition assistance. She hopes thousands of other Black families can begin building similar opportunities long before college applications are submitted. “I don’t just sell insurance,” she said. “I help families protect their future. This program gives parents a free way to start preparing for college today instead of worrying about how they’ll pay for it tomorrow.”
India brings extensive experience to the initiative. She is licensed in life, health, property, and casualty insurance across multiple states, is a licensed notary in both Maryland and Georgia, holds a Maryland real estate license with Georgia licensure in progress, and has earned the NFDA Certified Preplanning Consultant (CPC) designation in advance funeral planning. She is also the founder of Braveheart Burial Benefits, a nonprofit that assists families with burial planning, and Legacy Funeral Alliance, an organization connecting Black-owned funeral homes with preneed planning resources. Together, these initiatives reflect her broader mission of helping families build and protect generational wealth.
The Legacy Leaders Scholarship Program represents another step toward that vision. She believes that educational opportunity, financial planning, and wealth preservation should work together to strengthen Black families for generations to come. Her long-term goal is to enroll 25,000 families and partner with churches, schools, daycares, community organizations, and HBCU parent groups to host free scholarship enrollment events throughout the country. She is also available for media interviews, speaking engagements, and podcast appearances. “We are a community of builders,” she said. “My goal is to provide families with practical tools that help create lasting opportunities for the next generation.”
