16-Year-Old Black Teen Shot and Killed While Trying to Help Another Kid Being Bullied

Nationwide — Jalil Jones, a 16-year-old African American teen from Clayton County, Georgia, was shot and killed in Jonesboro while trying to stop a case of bullying. Police arrested a suspect as investigators linked the shooting to an escalating dispute.

Clayton County police arrested Joshua Clinton in connection with the killing. Officers booked him into the Clayton County Jail on charges including murder, aggravated assault, child cruelty, and tampering with evidence.

Investigators said the shooting happened on Mt. Zion Road. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division determined that an ongoing dispute involving multiple people escalated into gunfire.

According to WSB-TV, police said Jones stepped in during the incident to help another child who was being bullied when he was shot.

“He was outside trying to help and protect a young boy who needed help at the time,” said family friend and mentor Lyniece Wilkes.

Authorities also said Clinton may be connected to another shooting that took place after Jones’ death. Investigators added new charges tied to that separate case as they continued building evidence.

Detectives said the investigation remains active. They are reviewing leads and working to identify whether other individuals were involved in the violence.

A memorial has grown near the site of the shooting in Jonesboro. Wilkes said Jones had a strong presence in the community and left a lasting impact.

“He was well respected,” Wilkes said. “He was a 16-year-old kid. We took a big loss here in Jonesboro.”
