Nationwide — Jariah Edwards, an African American teen from Arizona, was shot while 32 weeks pregnant after her ex-boyfriend tracked her down while on vacation in San Diego, California. Her newborn baby initially survived, but also later died.
Police said the shooting happened around 1:10 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, while Edwards was visiting San Diego from Arizona. She was staying with family at a short-term vacation rental when the incident occurred, according to ABC15.
Officers responded after multiple 911 calls and found Edwards unconscious with a gunshot wound to the head. She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors worked to save both her and her unborn child.
Medical staff performed an emergency C-section, delivering her baby girl. The newborn survived but remains in critical condition. Edwards was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Investigators identified the suspect as Trevon Williams, Edwards’ ex-boyfriend, who is also from Arizona. Police said he traveled separately to San Diego and met Edwards outside the rental, saying he had flowers for her, before the shooting. He then fled on foot into a nearby canyon.
Friends said Edwards had been trying to leave the relationship before the incident occurred
Police later arrested Williams and recovered a semi-automatic handgun during the arrest. He faces charges including first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, possession or transportation of a machine gun, and discharging a firearm. He is being held without bail and is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday, June 3.
Family members described Edwards as a “bright” and “loving young woman” who was preparing to become a mother. A GoFundMe was set up to help cover funeral costs and medical care for the newborn. It has so far raised nearly $9,000.
Authorities continue to ask anyone with information to come forward as the investigation continues.
