5-Year-Old Boy Hailed a Hero for Saving His Family from a House Fire in Texas

Nationwide — Jayden, a 5-year-old African American boy from Longview, Texas, alerted his family to a house fire early Friday morning. His quick response helped six people escape safely before flames spread further.

According to 9 News, the fire started around 6:20 a.m., likely from an electrical issue in an outdoor outlet that spread into the home. Jayden woke up after hearing a loud popping sound and saw flames near the front door. Still holding his blanket, he immediately ran to alert his aunt, Lula Craven, “It’s a fire.”

Craven acted fast, and everyone inside managed to get out without serious injuries. Six residents escaped without serious injuries. One person was checked for possible smoke inhalation but did not require further treatment. Jayden, small but brave, said simply, “I wasn’t scared.” Craven described him as “our angel and our hero.”

As the family evacuated, neighbor Jana Herrera, an EMT and volunteer firefighter, happened to pass by on her way to work. She saw smoke and rushed to the home, knocking on doors and calling out to make sure no one was still inside before emergency crews arrived.

Firefighters later brought the blaze under control and confirmed around $75,000 in damage. The Longview Fire Department praised Jayden’s awareness and quick action, saying it helped prevent serious injuries or loss of life. Officials also reminded residents to regularly check outdoor electrical outlets to reduce fire risks.

Jayden’s courage turned a dangerous morning into a story of heroism, showing how a small act of alertness can save lives. Craven reflected, “The angel sent him to wake me up. Because I don’t know — we were just lucky we all got out.”
