Young Black Firefighter Sadly Dies After Firetruck Overturns While Responding to an Emergency Call

Nationwide — Juan Antonia Smith II, a 26-year-old firefighter from Rockdale County, Georgia, died after a firetruck overturned while responding to a structure fire on Friday evening in Conyers. Authorities said the vehicle crashed during a turn and led to a fatal outcome at the scene.

Smith was riding inside a Rockdale County Fire Rescue firetruck when crews were dispatched to a nearby structure fire. Georgia State Patrol said the driver attempted a left turn at the intersection of Eastview Road and Sigman Road. The truck then overturned onto its passenger side.

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the impact of the crash threw him out of the firetruck, and he died at the scene before emergency crews could further help.

Officials said Smith had served with Rockdale County Fire Rescue for about two and a half years. He joined the department on February 5, 2024, and worked active duty responding to emergencies across the county.

Local leaders said the loss deeply affected both the fire department and the wider community. Brian Kemp and other officials urged the public to keep Smith’s family, friends, and coworkers in their thoughts during the mourning period.

Authorities said funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized. The Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances that led to the firetruck overturn during the emergency response.
