Judge Carolyn Thompson Making History as the Highest Ranking Black Female in North Carolina’s State Judicial System

Nationwide — Last year, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper recognized and understood the 27 years of judicial experience and commitment to fairness and equitable justice that Judge Carolyn Thompson exudes. That’s why he appointed her to seat 12 on the North Carolina Court of Appeals. A post that makes Judge Thompson the highest ranking African American female in the state judicial system in the state.“The reason I appointed her is because of her record,” Cooper said. She’s been on the front line and in the trenches as an attorney, a trial judge, a district court judge and now on the court of appeals. She’s the right one for the job and we need to keep her there.”

The judicial races in North Carolina are now partisan and Thompson a registered democrat in a battleground state has her work cut out for her as she campaigns in a whopping 100 counties. Her opponent has no judicial experience but has been successful in obtaining sizeable campaign donations.

“As a former trial attorney and trial judge, my authored opinions are guided by my extensive experience,” said Thompson. I strive to provide final answers devoid of partisan ideologies, approaching cases with unbiased lenses to review lower courts’ decisions. At this level of appellate review, potentially affecting generations, my 27 years of expertise ensures fair and just outcomes.”
