Nationwide — Social media food critic Keith Lee is speaking openly about a frightening wrong-way crash that nearly killed him and his family near Dallas. After surviving the Sept. 3 collision, Lee credited God for protecting his family. His comments later sparked an online debate about faith, gratitude, and the death of another person in the crash. He described the experience as a “near-death experience” and said he saw headlights coming directly toward his car while driving with his wife and children. He said he quickly swerved behind a truck to avoid the car. “He drove right past me,” Lee recalled in a video. “It felt like a movie. It felt like slow motion.” He then watched through his rearview mirror as the car continued toward other cars behind him.
The crash happened late Sept. 3 on U.S. Highway 67 near Danieldale Road in Duncanville, Texas. Authorities said a car traveling the wrong way struck another car and clipped other cars. The wrong-way driver was reportedly driving a car that was reported stolen in Irving. He survived the crash and was arrested on an intoxication manslaughter charge. One person in the car that was hit died, while two others were taken to the hospital.
While recounting what happened, Lee repeatedly expressed his belief that God protected him and his family. “If God wasn’t with me last night, I wouldn’t be here, and I mean that wholeheartedly,” he said. He also said, “If God wasn’t with me, I don’t know who was.” For Lee, the frightening moment became a testimony about surviving an incident that could have ended very differently for his family.
He also expressed sympathy for those affected by the crash. “My condolences to the families who lost their loved ones,” Lee said before adding, “I can’t say nothing else, but God is amazing.” That statement drew criticism from some people online. According to EURWeb, commenters questioned how Lee could praise God for protecting his family when another family lost a loved one. Some also argued that his comments could be interpreted as suggesting God chose to spare his family while allowing another person to die.
Others defended Lee’s remarks as a personal expression of faith after surviving a traumatic experience. They said his comments did not necessarily mean he believed the victim’s death was part of a divine decision. The discussion has instead highlighted the complicated ways people respond to survival, loss, and faith after a tragedy, particularly when one person escapes a deadly situation while another does not.
