Young Black Mom of 5 Children Shot and Killed on Her Way to Church in Chicago

Nationwide — Kiara Jenkins, an African American mother of 5 from Chicago, was shot and killed early Sunday morning while walking to her church. Her death has left her family and church community devastated, with police still searching for a suspect and a motive.

Jenkins, 36, was a lifelong member of Mt. Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Woodlawn. She was known for her warmth and devotion, always helping others and welcoming anyone who came to the church.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, police say the shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. in an alley near 64th and Drexel, just steps from Jenkins’ home. She had been on her way to the church’s 5 a.m. service, which she attended regularly. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or determined a reason for the attack.

Neighbors said the area was quiet early Sunday morning, but chaos followed when police arrived. Michael Adams, who recently moved to the block, recalled Jenkins as friendly and outgoing. “It was just chaos. They had everything wrapped up in tape everywhere, front and back,” he said.

Jenkins leaves behind five children, whose ages range from 10 to a college freshman. Her eldest said the family is trying to stay together and support each other as they process the tragedy.

Police urge anyone with knowledge about the shooting to come forward. Chicago Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
