Black Mom and Daughter Killed in Car Crash, 80-Year-Old Woman Arrested for DUI

Nationwide — Lashea Bell and her daughter A’Niah Bell, an African American mother and daughter from Wichita, Kansas, were killed in a three-vehicle crash. Police said 80-year-old Clowie McLaughlin, who was speeding and drunk, has been charged with second-degree murder.

The crash happened Saturday night at the intersection of Central and Webb in Wichita. Investigators said McLaughlin was driving a black truck when she collided with a white car and a gray Jeep traveling in another direction.

According to WLBT, Lashea, 42, and her daughter, 25-year-old A’Niah were inside the white car. Lashea was pronounced dead at the scene. A’Niah was rushed to the hospital but later died from her injuries.

The Jeep’s driver was treated at the scene and released. McLaughlin, who was also injured, was taken to the hospital before being booked into the Sedgwick County Jail. Jail records confirm she faces charges of second-degree reckless but unintentional murder.

Police said both speed and alcohol played a role in the crash. McLaughlin, who is white, was reportedly released on a $100,000 bond.
