Nationwide — Leeland Harris, a 16-year-old African American teen from Atlanta, Georgia, died after a battle with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. Days before his death, he was able to fulfill his final wish of meeting Ludacris and other musical artists he admired.
Leeland’s family said he never let cancer define who he was. Outside of his health struggles, he was known as a talented musician and producer who taught himself how to play piano and create his own beats.
After learning about Leeland’s wish, people throughout Atlanta came together to help make the moment possible. According to 11Alive, he met Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris backstage during a concert at Piedmont Park, where the artist spent time with him and helped make his dream come true.
Other musicians also showed their support for Leeland. Rapper Young Dro visited with him, while reggae artist Sean Paul surprised him with a visit at his home.
The community continued celebrating Leeland by organizing a special tribute, with dozens of people lining the streets in exotic cars to show their support. A week before his death, Make-A-Wish Georgia also gifted him a music studio inside his home so he could continue creating music.
Throughout Leeland’s cancer battle, his family said they kept searching for treatment options and seeking additional medical opinions. They hope his story will inspire others to chase their dreams and remember the impact a supportive community can have.
