Nationwide — The Erie County District Attorney’s Office is urging the public to remain patient as it investigates the fatal shooting of Marchello Woodard, a local resident of Erie, Pennsylvania, killed by a state parole agent. District Attorney Elizabeth Hirz has vowed full transparency while maintaining the integrity of the ongoing investigation, emphasizing that a thorough and impartial review is underway. The incident occurred on July 2, and the Erie County Coroner has officially ruled the death a homicide following an autopsy conducted on July 3.
The district attorney has explained that the term “homicide” simply indicates that Woodard’s death was caused by another person, and does not imply any legal conclusions or criminal determinations. She acknowledged the community’s desire for clarity but emphasized the need for a complete and careful investigation before any decisions are made regarding potential charges.
The sister and cousins of Marchello sat down with Erie News Now to voice their frustrations with the lack of information and answers they have received from law enforcement officials. “It is very disappointing because I know if it was a regular civilian that shot an agent, it would be blown up and everything would be out for the public,” said Snowie Crosby, Woodard’s sister.
“He wanted to make a positive change in the community, he was very excited about that, and then to have that end in such a tragic manner, and we still do not have any answers, that is what is frustrating,” said Jerry Roberts, Woodard’s cousin.
“He loved his family, he was a family man, and anything you wanted, he would give you,” said Desiree Hasberry, Woodard’s cousin.
According to Pennsylvania State Police in Erie, the shooting took place as state parole agents were performing compliance checks around the city. The agents approached Woodard while he was sitting in a parked car on East 27th Street. Authorities claim that when Woodard attempted to drive off, one of the agents, who had grabbed onto the vehicle, opened fire while being dragged.
Erie Police officers, who were nearby at the time, responded swiftly and provided medical assistance. Woodard was transported to UPMC Hamot hospital but was later pronounced dead. The District Attorney’s Office, in collaboration with the Erie County Detectives and Pennsylvania State Police, is gathering statements, video footage, and forensic evidence related to the shooting.
In a public statement, the District Attorney has reiterated that the review will be independent and based strictly on facts and evidence. She emphasized that accountability and justice are top priorities for her office and promised that any decisions regarding criminal charges will be made in accordance with the law, once all information has been reviewed.
She concluded by assuring residents that her office understands the gravity of the situation and the impact it has had on the community. While some details may not be immediately released, updates will be provided when appropriate, and the investigation will continue with a commitment to fairness, transparency, and community trust.
