Nigeria — Margaret Adenuga, a 68-year old woman from Nigeria, has successfully given birth to twins after four IVF attempts. Noah Adenuga, her 77-year old husband of 46 years, is happy their dream of having children of their own has finally come true.“I am a dreamer, and I was convinced this particular dream of ours will come to pass,” Noah Adenuga told CNN. But they never gave up even after three previous IVF attempts that failed.
Most recently, Margaret Adenuga gave birth to twins — a boy and a girl — via caesarian section at 37 weeks at Lagos University Teaching Hospital. Because of her age, a specialist team was formed at the hospital to monitor her pregnancy, according to Dr. Adeyemi Okunowo who delivered the babies.
“As an elderly woman and a first-time mother, it was a high-risk pregnancy and also because she was going to have twins but we were able to manage her pregnancy to term,” he said.
Okunowo added that although it is now possible for older women to give conceive via IVF, its medical risks should still always be considered.
“There are age-related medical complications that come with being pregnant at that age such as the baby being born preterm. She’s lucky but many may succumb to other complications during or after having a baby,” he said.
