Pastor Jamal Bryant Defends Wife After Her Gown at a Fundraiser Sparked Criticism

Nationwide — Pastor Jamal Bryant spoke out after his wife, Dr. Karri Turner Bryant, faced online criticism for her gown at a recent Atlanta fundraiser. He called out those focusing on her outfit instead of the $4 million raised for HBCUs.

During a New Year’s Eve service, Bryant shared a video on Instagram addressing the backlash. The gown worn by Dr. Karri Turner Bryant was flesh-colored with black lace and a bow, paired with black gloves. Some critics wrongly called it see-through and questioned whether it was appropriate for a pastor’s wife.

Bryant said the criticism missed the event’s real purpose. He praised his wife’s prayers and highlighted that the fundraiser was the largest ever for HBCUs.

“The dress was not see-through, the dress was flesh-colored,” he said, according to People. “I needed to set the record straight: I bought the dress! And I like it. I don’t care whether you like it or not, she ain’t married to all. She married to me.”

Dr. Turner Bryant appeared emotional during the service, smiling and nodding as her husband spoke. She later thanked him on Instagram for defending her and supporting women facing similar judgment.

Bryant also redirected attention to broader community issues. He wrote that the dress debate was settled and urged focus on Black unemployment, healthcare access, protection for the undocumented, and education. The service also saw over 100 people saved and 1,000 children participating in the youth program.

Support poured in on social media, with supporters praising the couple’s work. Celebrities, including Michelle Williams and Angela Rye, also publicly backed Bryant and his wife.
