Arkansas Black Teen with Autism Plays in State Football Championship Game

Peyton Wesley

Nationwide — Peyton Wesley, an African American teen boy from Arkadelphia, Arkansas diagnosed with autism, made his debut in a state football championship game. His dedication to the sport and the support from his teammates led to a memorable moment as he took the field for the final play.

Peyton’s journey with Arkadelphia football began early. Even in kindergarten, he showed his school spirit by holding doors open for students. When he reached seventh grade, he wanted to play football, but his mother hesitated due to his autism diagnosis. The coaches reassured her, and he was given the chance to join.

Head coach Trey Schucker praised Peyton’s commitment. “He comes to practice every day with a smile on his face,” he told Fox 16.

His teammates admired his passion and encouraged him to play a playoff game. However, Peyton had a bigger goal — he wanted to play in the state championship.

That dream became reality when Arkadelphia led Elkins 28-0. In the final play, Peyton stepped onto the field, entering in the victory formation.

Reflecting on the unforgettable moment, Peyton said, “I will never forget that moment.”
