Poet Amanda Gorman Named UNICEF New Ambassador, Continues Fight for Children’s Rights

Nationwide — Amanda Gorman, a 27-year-old poet and activist, has been named UNICEF’s newest ambassador, continuing her work for children’s rights. She will perform an original poem at the upcoming 20th annual UNICEF Gala to highlight global issues affecting children.

Gorman has worked with UNICEF since 2021, using her voice to advocate for children’s health, education, and protection. Her new role as ambassador strengthens her platform to promote aid and awareness for children, especially in emergency situations.

According to People, she debuts her poem at the 20th annual UNICEF Gala on Dec. 2, calling attention to the urgent need for a better world for all children. The event highlights Gorman’s ongoing efforts to turn advocacy into action.

“Working with UNICEF has shown me that when we choose to uplift children, we are choosing to uplift our shared future,” Gorman said. She added that “it is an honor” to formally join the organization and continue supporting its mission to help children globally.

Gorman has previously highlighted children’s challenges on the international stage. At the 2022 U.N. General Assembly, she recited An Ode We Owe, addressing issues of poverty and inequality. She hopes her upcoming performance will continue to draw attention to these pressing concerns.

UNICEF USA President Michael J. Nyenhuis welcomed Gorman, praising her ability to inspire change and spark conversation. He noted that she will motivate the next generation of philanthropists while advancing UNICEF’s goal of equity and protection for every child.

This new role comes after a notable year for Gorman. In January, she published Girls on The Rise, a children’s book celebrating solidarity among young girls. She created the book to help girls feel supported and part of a community, especially in a challenging world.
