Nationwide — Tyka Nelson, the younger sister of legendary musician Prince, has passed away at the age of 64. The news was shared by her cousin, Charles “Chazz” Smith, who made the announcement on social media on November 4. “Our family is very saddened to share the news of my cousin Tyka Evene Nelson who passed away this morning,” Smith wrote. Her son, President LenNard Laeil Nelson, later confirmed the news to The Minnesota Star Tribune. While the cause of her death remains undisclosed, Tyka was known not only as Prince’s only full sibling but also for carving her own musical path. Born to John L. Nelson and Mattie Shaw Nelson, she lived most of her life in Minnesota. Over the years, Tyka released four albums: Royal Blue (1988), Yellow Moon, Red Sky (1992), A Brand New Me (2008), and Hustler (2011).
Tyka gained attention during a public appearance at the 2017 My Name Is Prince exhibition in London, which showcased personal items of the iconic performer, including instruments, stage outfits, and handwritten lyrics. Although she announced her retirement from public life, she planned a farewell concert at Minnesota’s Dakota venue in June. Unfortunately, Tyka fell ill and was unable to attend the event. “I’m getting older,” she shared with the Tribune. “I really wasn’t a singer. I’m a writer. I just happen to be able to sing. I enjoy singing.”
She had also been working on a memoir reflecting on her family and life experiences, though it was unfinished by June. “We’ve got a few more chapters,” Tyka mentioned at the time. She candidly spoke about dealing with loss, particularly after Prince’s death in 2016. “I’m one heck of a grateful person who had wonderful people in their life. I miss their wisdom,” she expressed.
Tyka Nelson is survived by her husband, Maurice Phillips, and their six children: daughters Danielle, Crystal, Chelsea, and sons Rachard, Sir Montece Laeil, and President. Reflecting on her connection to Prince and his fans, Tyka once shared, “If I could, I’d travel the whole world and meet people that loved him — I’m kind of the last link to him, for some people — it’s like giving back to him. As far as I’m concerned, he stayed because they loved his music.”
