Nationwide — Regina Brumley Kerr, a 45-year-old African American mother and teacher who was living in Costa Rica, tragically passed away after complications from a tummy tuck and liposuction. She was taken to a local hospital but could not be saved.
Brumley Kerr underwent multiple cosmetic procedures at a private clinic, including a tummy tuck, fat transfer, and arm liposuction. Shortly afterward, she experienced complications that required an emergency transfer to Hospital México in San José, the capital of Costa Rica.
The Judicial Investigation Department confirmed her body was recovered at the hospital on January 23. “The victim was referred to the medical center that same day, apparently from an aesthetic clinic, and declared deceased around noon,” the department reported, according to People.
Officials said the cause of death is still under investigation, and autopsy results have yet to be released. Hospital México did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brumley Kerr taught at Siquirres Bilingual Experimental School and Padre Roberto Evans Saunders Technical College. A school spokesperson offered condolences, saying, “We stand in solidarity with her family and wish her peace that surpasses all understanding.”
Friends described her as a devoted mother. Giovani Montiel, who saw her about a month before her death, said her “dream was for her daughters to be professionals and be close to their mother.” She leaves behind two daughters, ages 20 and 7.
Her sudden passing has left the community grieving and highlights the risks that can come with cosmetic surgery, even at private clinics.
