Nationwide — Salenah Cartier, a 23-year-old African American woman from Houston, Texas, has become the youngest PhD graduate at the University of Houston. She earned a doctorate in education and continues focusing on improving learning access for underserved communities.
Cartier now holds the record as the youngest Ph.D. graduate at the University of Houston, based on school records dating back to 2007. She completed her Doctor of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, marking another major step in her academic journey at UH.
Cartier’s work centers on education and how it shapes opportunity. She continues to highlight the importance of learning systems that reach communities with fewer resources.
“Education is the foundation of society, and I wholeheartedly believe that empowering underserved communities through education and technology, we can unlock a bucket of potential in those spaces,” Cartier told ABC 13.
Her academic path moved at an unusually fast pace. In 2020, she graduated as the University of Houston’s youngest graduate after earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology at age 17. She then completed a master’s degree in education by age 18.
Each milestone was built toward her doctorate in education, with a consistent focus on curriculum and instruction.
