Nationwide — Meet Shakea Miller, the first African American woman to establish a degree-granting technical college in Alabama. She accomplished this on June 24, 2024, when she officially opened 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College in Phenix City.
Shakea’s groundbreaking venture not only enriches the educational landscape of Alabama but also sets a powerful precedent for aspiring educators and students across the country. The significance of Miller’s achievement is underscored by the historical context of her endeavor. Prior to her initiative, there were only five other African American women in the United States who had successfully founded institutions that grant degrees. She is now the sixth nationwide and the first in the state of Alabama.
“Shakea Miller’s accomplishment is not just a personal triumph but a monumental victory for the African American community and all those in academia,” stated Carla Barnett who is the Assistant Dean of 1 on 1 Technical & Theological College. “Her leadership in opening the first African American woman-founded, degree-granting technical college in Alabama is a bold step towards rectifying the underrepresentation of minority groups in higher education leadership.”
The new college is set to offer a variety of degree programs tailored to meet the needs of the modern workforce and to foster the development of skills essential for career success in the 21st century, along with 50 new certificate programs. With a commitment to affordability and accessibility, the institution aims to attract a diverse student body, equipped to contribute innovatively and effectively in their chosen fields.
