Black Deputy in Louisiana Shot and Killed By His Brother

Shaquille Guerin

Nationwide — Shaquille Guerin, a 35-year-old African American sheriff’s deputy with St. John the Baptist Parish, was shot and killed by his brother, 32-year-old Darius Guerin, in Waggaman, Louisiana. Authorities said Darius fled the scene but was arrested after a chase through Jefferson Parish.

The shooting happened just after 5:30 p.m. on Marigold Lane, where deputies found Guerin lying in the street with at least one gunshot wound. First responders tried to revive him, but he died at the scene.

According to WLBT, investigators quickly identified Darius Guerin of Marrero as the suspect. They shared information about the vehicle he used to leave the area, and patrol units across Jefferson Parish began searching for it.

Around 7 p.m., a deputy spotted the vehicle near Ames and Lapalco boulevards. Authorities said Darius refused to pull over, leading deputies on a pursuit that continued into Lafitte. The vehicle eventually stopped on Jean Lafitte Boulevard. Darius ran from the car, but deputies chased him down and arrested him. A gun was found along the route where he fled.

Officials said he will be booked with second-degree murder. Detectives are still looking into what led to the confrontation between the brothers.

Guerin had served the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office for eight years, working in both the uniform patrol division and the detective bureau. Sheriff Mike Tregre described him as a dedicated deputy who brought positivity to his team.

He is survived by his wife, Roxanne, and their three children. Support teams are assisting the family and department members as the investigation continues.
