47-Year-Old Black Woman Who Naturally Delivered Triplets is Doing Great 11 Years Later

Sharon Lewis

Nationwide Sharon Lewis, an African American woman from Miami, Florida, made headlines 11 years ago when she naturally gave birth to triplets at age 47. Now 58 years old, she and her children are healthy and thriving.

Lewis was already raising two kids, a 25-year-old daughter and a 14-year-old son, when she learned she was pregnant again. The news that she was carrying three babies came as a shock. She called it a “wonderful surprise” once the reality set in, she told CBS News.

Her triplets, Dylan, Denere, and Denard, were born on March 18, 2014 at Holtz Children’s Hospital in Miami. Each weighed around two pounds and spent weeks in the neonatal intensive care unit before going home.

Doctors delivered the babies early, at 30 weeks, because Lewis developed high blood pressure. Medical staff said her case was rare, noting how unusual it was for a woman her age to conceive naturally, let alone carry triplets without fertility treatments.

“It was a miracle she got pregnant. It was a miracle she got three. And all of them are healthy and normal and she is fine,” said Dr. Salih Y. Yasin, who handled her high-risk pregnancy. He explained that the chances of conceiving triplets naturally at that age are extremely rare.

Lewis said faith carried her through the unexpected journey. She believed her pregnancy was a blessing and looked forward to raising her children with love.

Now, more than a decade later, Lewis and her triplets continue to do well, living proof of a rare and remarkable birth story.
