Nationwide — Terrica and Shawn, the parents of a newborn at Cayuga Medical Center, were surprised when their baby boy, Shawn Jr., arrived weighing 13 pounds, making him the largest baby in the hospital’s history. Just hours later, another baby was born at the same hospital, a complete opposite in size at just 4 pounds.
Shawn Jr. was born on January 31, exceeding even his parents’ expectations. “We knew he’d be bigger, but we didn’t expect this,” Terrica told People. “He’s already wearing three to six-month diapers and clothes. It feels like I skipped straight to having a 3-month-old.”
Later that day, Chloe and Victor welcomed their newborn at Cayuga Medical Center. Their baby weighed just 4 pounds, a striking contrast to Shawn Jr.’s record-breaking size. Chloe described the experience as “really charming” and praised the hospital staff for their care.
The two births highlighted how every baby and birth story is different. Robyn Torgalski, system director of maternal child health at Centralus Health, said the events were a reminder that newborns come in all sizes.
“These two births are a wonderful reminder that every baby and every birth story is unique,” Torgalski said in a statement. “Whether a newborn weighs 4 pounds or 13, our teams are prepared to provide the highest level of care to both baby and family.”
Cayuga Medical Center staff said both deliveries showed their team’s readiness to handle any situation. They expressed pride in providing exceptional maternity care and supporting families during such unforgettable moments.
