71-Year Old Grandmother Shot and Killed While Protecting Her Granddaughter

Nationwide — Just weeks after recovering from the deadly coronavirus, Shiela Lucas, a 71-year old grandmother from Washington, DC has tragically died after being shot while protecting her granddaughter during an altercation with two other women.According to reports, the shooting happened after two women had a confrontation inside a Giant supermarket. Lucas was walking back home with her daughter, granddaughter, and great-grandchildren when the women, whom they didn’t know, returned and started another confrontation.

Lucas’ son, Robert J. Alston Jr., said Lucas stepped in to try to protect her granddaughter when someone started shooting.

“My mom tried to step in between to make sure that they didn’t fight,” Alston told KTUU. “A gunshot rang [out]. My mom gets hit in the head, and then, she’s no longer here with us.”

Lucas was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Another male bystander was also shot during the incident, but his injuries are not life-threatening.

30 years ago, Lucas was also shot, but she survived. Alston remembered his mother as a strong single mother. She worked as a nurse assistant while raising her six children alone when her husband died.

Meanwhile, DC Metropolitan Police are calling for anyone with information about the shooting to come forward. A $25,000 reward is offered for information that leads to the arrest of the persons involved.
