Nationwide — Teonia Stokes, a 22-year-old African American female college student who was 7 months pregnant, was fatally shot in Monroe, Georgia. The suspect, Dorreous Brooks, was arrested days later after a multi-agency manhunt.
The shooting happened on January 25 in the 100 block of GW Carver Drive. Police said Stokes, who was set to graduate in a few months from KSU, died at the scene. A 25-year-old man was also injured during the gunfire but survived.
Authorities quickly identified 36-year-old Dorreous Brooks as a suspect. He was charged with felony murder and feticide. Police described him as armed and dangerous in the days following the shooting, as reported by 11Alive.
Brooks was arrested on Tuesday after a coordinated multi-county search. Monroe Police worked with Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Covington Police, Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, and received assistance from Walton and Barrow County sheriff’s offices to capture him.
Investigators had offered a $1,000 reward for information leading to Brooks’ arrest. Police continue to urge anyone with information to come forward to help with the ongoing investigation.
