Man Sentenced to 15 Years After Dollar Store Robbery Gone Wrong

Nationwide — Torrance Stewart, a 31-year-old African American man from Jackson, Mississippi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to rob a dollar store in May 2022. He threatened the clerk with a gun but fled when the cash register failed to open.

According to WJTV, Stewart walked into the store on May 2, 2022, carrying a firearm. Prosecutors said he demanded money from the register and tried to force the clerk to hand over cash.

When the register jammed, Stewart ran from the store. Jackson police quickly responded and chased him through a nearby neighborhood. He was arrested shortly after.

The case was investigated with help from the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, alongside the Jackson Police Department. Authorities reviewed security footage and witness statements to piece together the events.

During sentencing, the court emphasized the seriousness of using a firearm in an attempted robbery. Stewart’s 15-year term reflects the risk and threat his actions posed to the store clerk and the public.
