Former Ohio State Football Star and Mo-tivation Unlimited Producer Maurice Hall Leads Indie Feature That Defies L.A. Production Odds
Nationwide — Production is wrapping this week on The Seed, the powerful inspirational drama marking the feature directorial debut of Vanna James – and starring Trishauna Clarke as Gloria and Maurice Hall as Reuben, a married couple fighting to hold their family together through addiction, betrayal, and the long road back to each other.
For James, stepping into the director’s chair for the first time on a project this personal was both a challenge and a calling. “Directing my first feature is an honor- but more than that, it’s a responsibility,” said James. “This story is raw, real, and deeply human. I wanted to bring that truth to every frame, and working with Trishauna and Maurice made that possible. They gave everything to these roles.”
Clarke delivers a raw, emotionally charged performance as Gloria, the wife and mother who watches her family unravel while her husband Reuben (Hall) battles the cycles of brokenness that defined his past. Together, they portray the heart of a true story about two people who couldn’t save themselves – but found a way to surrender and rebuild.
“I play Gloria – and this role challenged me in ways I didn’t expect,” said Clarke. “She’s a woman who has every reason to walk away, but she chooses to fight for her family. That kind of strength is rare to find on screen, and I’m honored to bring her to life alongside Maurice and Vanna, who trusted me from day one.”
The film also stars NY Giants players Jameis Winston and Eric Gray, with James making her directorial debut at the helm. Hall produces under his Mo-tivation Unlimited banner – a personal milestone for the former Buckeye who helped secure Ohio State’s 2002 National Championship before pivoting to Hollywood.
And here’s the twist: The Seed is shooting in Los Angeles right now – at the exact moment the L.A. Times is reporting that indie filmmakers are fleeing to Mexico and Georgia due to rising costs. Hall and James chose L.A. anyway, betting on the city that gave them their start.
“This story is about second chances – and so is this production,” said Hall, who also co-stars as Reuben. “We could’ve gone anywhere, but L.A. is where dreams are born. Wrapping this week feels like proof that indie filmmaking isn’t dead here – it’s just hungry. And under Mo-tivation Unlimited, I’m committed to telling stories that actually matter.”
Based on the true story of Hall’s producing partner’s father – a man from the Memphis projects who broke every cycle of addiction, adultery, and brokenness – The Seed is a raw, deeply motivational narrative with no Hollywood fluff. Just real people, real struggles, and real second chances.
Clarke and Hall lead a cast that includes Jordan Sunshine, Ca’Ron Coleman, and Shamere Dunswell as their children, rounding out a family portrait that anchors the film’s emotional core.
Production wraps this week in the Los Angeles area. Further casting announcements, release dates, and distribution details will follow. Interviews with Clarke, Hall, and first-time director Vanna James are available upon request.
