Black Woman, Formally a Teen Mom at 14 Launches Non-Profit to Help At-Risk Girls

Nationwide — After becoming pregnant at the young age of 14, Tyra Moore has started a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called A Girl Like Me Inc. to help others in similar situations and provide them assistance. The Detroit, Michigan-based organization began as an incredibly modest grassroots initiative, mostly supported by contributions, proceeds from the sale of t-shirts, and individual investments. Now, however, Tyra is looking forward to really providing at-risk, low-income teenage girls, ages 11 to 17, as well as young mothers up to 25, with the education, resources, support, mentoring, and basic needs required to help them make informed decisions about their reproductive health and their future.

Tyra started the organization to help prevent teenage pregnancy and educate young mothers. It all began when she became pregnant at the young age of 14 in 2007. Her mother found out in the same week she gave birth. Her mother told everyone, and she was greatly supported by her friends, family, and community. This experience led her to start this organization to help girls, teenagers, teen mothers, and mothers.

To reach even more young people, Tyra partnered with The International Girls Academy to publish the book Daughters of the Community, which was released on Amazon on October 11th, 2022. The book includes the stories of eight girls between 11 to 17 years who are part of the two nonprofits.

Tyra received her high school diploma and just recently graduated from college, where she obtained her Associate of Arts Degree and will be a Surgical Tech.

“The main purpose of starting the organization was to help other girls in similar situations and prevent teen pregnancies. However, if someone is pregnant, we provide them with necessities and the right education to raise a child,” she says.

Tyra never got the chance to attend her prom as she was a teen parent. She fulfilled her wish by throwing herself a prom and inviting 25 teen mothers 17 to 100 years old and their dates to attend the prom. The event now is A Girl Like Me Inc signature event.

Her organization is looking to start speaking and provide needed items around the world to teen and young moms. Her goal is to one day open up a A Girl Like Me Inc Home in her neighborhood, get a 15-passenger van to help with the mentoring program, donation delivery, and pick-ups and to be able to hire staff to assist her.
