Nationwide — Zah’layah Walter, a 5-year-old African American girl from Texas, was killed after someone allegedly opened fire on her family’s car in a suspected road rage shooting. Her mother was driving her five children home late Saturday night when gunfire struck the vehicle, killing Zah’layah and injuring two of her siblings. The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. near Grant Road and Jones Road in Harris County, as reported by People. Monica Hicks said the family had been visiting her mother before heading home when another vehicle began firing at them. She heard several shots but did not realize right away that one of her children had been wounded.
As the gunfire continued, the children in the back seat began screaming. Hicks said at least five rounds hit the family’s vehicle, but she could not identify the person who was shooting because the attack happened so quickly. She kept driving until they reached their apartment complex, where she discovered that Zah’layah had been shot.
Zah’layah was flown to a hospital for emergency treatment, but she died from her injuries. Hicks later spoke about the loss of her daughter, calling her “the light of my life” and saying, “That was my baby.” Two of Zah’layah’s siblings were also hurt when the vehicle’s windows shattered. Their injuries were not considered life-threatening, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities arrested 47-year-old Jeremy Porter on Sunday, Sept. 20, in connection with the shooting. He faces a capital murder charge and remains in the Harris County Jail. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said investigators used automated license plate readers to help identify and locate the vehicle believed to be connected to the shooting. Authorities are investigating the case as a suspected road rage incident, but the events that led to the gunfire have not been fully established.
The family is now also facing the costs of Zah’layah’s funeral and burial. A GoFundMe campaign has been created to help with those expenses. It has so far raised over $5,700. Investigators continue to examine what happened before the shooting and what led the suspect to allegedly fire at the family’s vehicle.
