Nationwide — In early April, Monica proudly announced on twitter that she said an emphatic “yes” to a wedding proposal from Rodney whom she met on the MELD dating app some time ago. In a world proliferated with all sorts of frivolous dating apps, MELD is a niche dating app that focuses on the under-served market of Black professionals, and emphasizes long-lasting meaningful relationships.

The impact of technology on relationships in the 21st century particularly for Black millennials is a complicated one. Recently, Chris Rudder, Co-founder of OKCupid, in his book “Dataclysm” pointed to the fact that Black people, in general, have the lowest success rates on the major dating platforms, such as OkCupid, Match, e-harmony etc. Yet, other statistics show that 42% of all African American women have never been married, and up to 70% of professional Black women are single and not by choice.

The notion of MELD has always been that if a safe environment was created for Black professionals to discover each other romantically, the success rates from online dating would be significantly improved. Stories, such as those of Monica’s and Rodney’s, demonstrate that technology can indeed have significant beneficial impact on romantic relationships for Black millennials.
