Nationwide — Jason Arrington, a 39-year-old African American man from Florida, was accidentally shot with his own gun by a police officer during a traffic stop. The officer involved, Mindy Cardwell, now faces termination following the incident.
Officer Cardwell, who arrived to assist, attempted to remove the gun. However, she accidentally discharged it, shooting Arrington in the upper thigh.
The bullet caused severe bleeding and the officers applied a tourniquet to stabilize him. He was quickly rushed to the hospital.
Although Arrington is expected to recover, the injury has impacted his work as a crane operator. He has since filed a lawsuit against the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office.
Following an Internal Affairs investigation, Cardwell was found to be incompetent. The department has moved forward with her termination.
