Nationwide — Terra McKinnon, a 45-year-old African American deputy sheriff in Polk County, Florida, sadly died after fighting breast cancer for years. Her death left the sheriff’s office and the Dundee community mourning a well-loved public servant.
McKinnon joined the Polk County Sheriff’s Office in 2006. She spent her early years on patrol, later stepping into the role of street training instructor, where she helped guide newer deputies. Her colleagues often described her as steady, patient, and deeply committed to her work, according to 11Alive.
She later served at the Dundee Sheriff’s Station, focusing on community-oriented policing. Her warm approach and constant presence made her a familiar face in the town, and the agency said residents quickly grew to appreciate her dedication.
PCSO said her health started declining as she continued her fight with breast cancer, complicated by an already weakened immune system. Even with health challenges, she remained committed to serving the community she loved.
In a message posted on social media, the sheriff’s office expressed heartbreak over her passing and thanked the community for supporting her family and fellow deputies.
“We already miss her — her ever-present smile, her selfless service, and her commitment to our agency and our citizens. We are so grateful we had her for nearly 20 years. Rest in peace, 6224. We love you,” PCSO said in a statement.
