Memphis, TN — Camryn (Kam) Porter, a Black woman from Memphis, was with her godchildren and her boyfriend at their apartment complex swimming pool when a woman claiming that she was the property manager racially profiled them and called the police because her boyfriend was wearing socks. That woman, Erica Walker, has been subsequently fired.
Porter believes it all happened because they were black.
“I pay rent like everyone else I have never had any issues with a sock until today. Mind you, we are the only black people out here and as soon as we walked up she had something to say,” Porter said in her Facebook video.
“A property manager should be able to de-escalate something to handle a situation as simple as that was without involving MPD,” Porter told Local Memphis.
Porter also noted that the property manager seems not to have a clear definition of proper pool attire.
“She said no hats, no shirts, no socks, we have 2 men who are her friends sitting here in 2 hats. Man sitting here in a hat,” Porter said in her video.
Porter’s Facebook post reached the ownership group of Riverset Apartments where the incident happened and they addressed the issue. On their Facebook page, they released a statement saying, “[the] former employee’s actions violate our company’s policies and beliefs. She is no longer employed by Riverset Apartments.”
“You can’t treat people like that in this day and age. It’s not right,” Porter said.
