New Book, “Not All Superheroes Wear Capes,” Encourages Black Children to Pursue Careers in STEM

Dallas, TX — Melanin Origins, LLC announces the publication this summer of Not All Superheroes Wear Capes (available for pre-order on Amazon.com or BarnesandNoble.com), a children’s book designed to teach African American students the opportunities available to them in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) careers. Written by Alecia Heffner, this inspiring new book combines positive images of African Americans engaging in exciting careers with a powerful message of how these individuals help others in their daily life.

Doctors, dentists, nurses, and chemists are often attired in white lab coats, and not capes, but are the true heroes helping people every day.

Unfortunately, minorities are frequently underrepresented in STEM careers, because many children are rarely exposed to both positive role models and the need for higher education. Not All Superheroes Wear Capes aims to teach children that there is a new world of science possibilities. The key to becoming a real superhero, the book teaches about caring for others, particularly through helping professions. Pursuing a college education is also emphasized.

“I wanted to bring awareness of the possibilities of allied health and STEM professions to children who are not otherwise exposed to them,” states Ms. Heffner, a proud HBCU alumnae of Dillard University. “I also believe in exemplifying African Americans in a way not often presented in a children’s book, showing positive role models making a real difference in the world.” Not All Superheroes Wear Capes shows STEM professionals using science and math in their everyday work life.

About the author
Alecia Heffner is the founder of the STEM Initiative, an organization dedicated to sparking the interest of STEM careers among African American children. The STEM Initiative also offers career exploration, mentorship, and scholarships for students entering into STEM fields at the undergraduate level and into professional schools. Ms. Heffner is currently a Doctor of Education candidate at Northeastern University, holding a B.S. in Public Health and an M.S. in Healthcare Management.
