Dayonna Gibson, student who died after being stabbed by her classmate
Warren, MI — Dayonna Gibson, a 16-year old student from Michigan, died after being fatally stabbed by her classmate and former friend at Fitzgerald High School. Authorities say she was stabbed twice in the chest using a kitchen knife during a fight over a boy. The suspect, a 17-year old student, is now in custody.
“I heard screaming, and I thought everyone was running from a bug or something, I turned around and saw a girl stab another girl,” Francesca Pascua, who is a 17-year-old eleventh-grader, told The Detroit News.
“It went in, and it went out,” she recalled. “There was blood everywhere and she (the victim) ran.”
No motive has yet been determined but there’s a possibility that they are fighting over a boy whom they both dated, according to authorities. Warren Police Commissioner William Dwyer stated that the boy is cooperating in the investigation and that authorities are now seeking for a murder charge to the suspect.
“This is the first type of situation we’ve had in the school district in the past 50 years,” he told reporters Wednesday. “Officers can’t recall a case where a student was actually murdered at a high school in Warren.”
According to witnesses, a school resource officer tried to save her life and administered CPR until medics arrived. She was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead about an hour later.
Gibson and the suspect, who are both straight-A students, are said to have been friends before the shocking incident. Gibson was also an active member of the marching band, color guard, robotics club, and cross country team.
“We are deeply saddened to share that the Fitzgerald High School student who was stabbed this morning passed away at the hospital,” the school said in a statement. “Our hearts and prayers go out to the student’s family and we offer our deepest sympathy.”
