New Children’s Book For Young Readers Promotes Health and Entrepreneurship

Washington, DC  — David Miller, a writer, educator and social entrepreneur, has released The Greene Family Farm. The book is part of a series of books focused on providing parents with greater access to books written and illustrated by people of color.

Miller a former public school teacher was frustrated several years ago trying to find books for his own children written and illustrated by people of color. Miller’s first children’s book, Khalil’s Way, was released in 2012. Khalil’s Way is the story of a pre-teenaged African American male math genius growing up in post- Katrina New Orleans who has to deal with bullying.

According to an article which appeared in the New York Times in March of 2014, Where Are the People of Color in Children’s Books? a huge void exists in the children’s book publishing world. The article points out that of 3,200 children’s books published in 2013, just 93 were about black people, according to a study by the Cooperative Children’s Book Center at the University of Wisconsin.

Miller and a host of other writers and illustrators across the country are working to change this inequity. Miller’s new book The Greene Family Farm features a family in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn who realize they are living in a food desert. The family steps out on faith and opens up an organic garden in a vacant lot across the street from their apartment building.

The story is told from the eyes of six year Akousa who helps her parents run the organic farm with her mom, dad and 11 year old brother (Booker T. Washington- Greene).

On most weekends and after school Akousa and her family are surrounded by dirt, fertilizer, vegetables and fruit. The Greene Family Farm grows some of the sweetest watermelons in the country and often sells fruits and vegetables to farmers markets in other boroughs of New York City. From strawberries to zucchini people call this small farm “Brooklyn’s Finest.”

The Greene Family Farm also sells peaches, figs, broccoli, turnips, kale and carrots to many local restaurants and stores in Brooklyn. They promote several core values which include: family, entrepreneurship and healthy living.

The book is a great read for young readers in grades 1st through 4th. The book is rich with amazing full color images and a great story line for young readers.
