Black Motivator, Community Activist Partners With Cities and Counties to Keep Senior Citizens Active Online

Via his foundation, Orrin Hudson is keeping children and senior citizens safe and productive during the pandemic.

Nationwide — Orrin Hudson, founder of Be Someone, an Atlanta-based non-profit organization that uses chess as a metaphor to teach individuals the power of focus and concentration, has launched a new online program for senior citizens across the country. Using Zoom, Orrin is partnering with cities, counties, and municipalities to help local senior citizens in their communities to remain active, productive, creative, and most of all, safe.

Orrin comments, “The law of use says that ‘If you don’t use it, you’ll lose it.” He has already proven that his virtual classes work and can be used as a national model to help senior citizens of all ages. Currently, he has partnered with a senior center in DeKalb County, Georgia, and the results have proven to be game-changing.

“My organization works with all people age 8 to 88, but children are back in school now. So we are primarily focused on the senior citizen community right now,” he says. “Many people think that senior citizens are not knowledgeable enough to use their devices to benefit from an online session, but this is not true at all. We make it okay for seniors to embrace technology.”

Since 2000, Orrin’s Be Someone program has provided training to more than 77,000 people. It’s more than just chess though. He teaches his students problem solving, critical thinking, and decision making. His program helps young people navigate the challenges and complexities of life, and helps senior citizens incorporate the law of youth and remain mentally and physically sharp, as well as tech-savvy.
