Nationwide — Security made a group of drunk men leave Manny’s Blue Room Bar in Robbins, Illinois around 4am Sunday morning, but witnesses say that several of those men came back with a gun and at least one opened fire. Several armed security guards then returned fire, and one of the guards, 26-year old Jemel Roberson, apprehended one of the men involved in the incident. But when police responded to the scene, they fired shots at Jemel and killed him.

One witness told reporters, “He [Jemel] had somebody on the ground with his knee in back, with his gun in his back like, ‘Don’t move.'” Moments later, though, when police arrived… Jemel was dead. “Everybody was screaming out, ‘Security!’ He was a security guard,” the witness said. “And they still did their job, and saw a black man with a gun, and basically killed him.”

The Midlothian Police Department have yet to admit their mistake or issue a public apology. They did, however, issue a statement to the media saying, “A Midlothian officer encountered a subject with a gun and was involved in an officer-involved shooting. The subject the officer shot was later pronounced deceased at an area hospital.”

Meanwhile, Jemel’s friends, family and the local community are grieving. They say he was “a man of God” who was also a musician that played the organ and drums at several local churches. He had plans to become a police officer.

“Once again, it’s the continued narrative that we see of shoot first, ask questions later,” a local preacher said.

A GoFundMe page raised on Jemel’s behalf has already raised more than $22,500.
