Author Tells His Story — From Working in Mississippi Cotton Fields to Sleeping in the White House

Ty Pinkins, author of 23 Miles and Running

Rolling Fork, MS — At age thirteen, Ty Pinkins began working in the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. Growing up in a system of poverty, racism, and inequality, he dreamed of traveling the world. However, his wildest fascinations could not have prepared him for the amazing journey ahead.

23 Miles & Running: My American Journey from chopping cotton in the Mississippi Delta to sleeping in the White House is Pinkins’ deeply personal account of his journey from an old shack on a dirt road in Mississippi to sleeping in the White House and working for the first black President of the United States.

At a time when so many people feel like the odds are stacked against them, Pinkins’ incredible journey provides an injection of positive energy, inspiration, and hope that the American dream is still attainable. In 23 Miles & Running, Pinkins beautifully weaves together his story-creating a touching narrative of family, sacrifice, heartache, hard work, and redemption.

“Positive energy wins the day, every-single-time,” Pinkins says. “Each day, we face naysayers, obstacles, and setbacks. Instead of focusing on the seemingly overwhelming negative things that happen in our lives, we must take a moment to grab hold of some of the many tiny morsels of positivity that take place each day and continue taking our own necessary next step forward.”

Pinkins is a decorated veteran with a 21-year military career, including three combat tours. He is co-founder and President of the Pyramid Project, a nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing youth from underserved communities to the social, cultural, and economic capital necessary to help fulfill their dreams. He is dedicated to public service and is passionate about helping people who feel that the odds are stacked against them, particularly people in underserved communities like the one in which he was raised. Though his military career took him to 23 countries and taught him much about the world, he never forgets that his journey began in the Mississippi Delta.
